Silicon Valley is not your friend

No. Silicon Valley is not your friend (via Jérémie Fontana). But the reasons why are sadly all mushed together in this New-York Times article.

These monopolistic behemoths aim for growth at any cost under the influence of investors. For that reason, they use dark design patterns to manipulate their users and make them into addicts. (The article has good quotes on early specialists’ warnings about that). These companies do suffer from a lack of ethics and forethought in their design decisions even as they position themselves as free speech integrists. And we should fix this. True.

But the aim is not to stop driverless cars to keep drivers employed — especially if computers are really better at driving than humans. The idea is to ensure everyone gets to live a decent life. It is to break these monopolies, decentralize web services and change our governance models.
